Since 2002 we set high standards that guarantee that we produce clean energy while protecting the environment and benefiting our neighboring communities, our employees, our shareholders and our stakeholders in general.
In Colombia, we have an Environmental Management System (EMS) certified to ISO 14001:2015 through August 2026, that guides our environmental performance and allows us to identify, prioritize and manage environmental risks. Supported by the guidelines of our Environmental Commitment, we run awareness and training programs for our employees on the efficient use of natural resources and compliance with environmental regulations.
Together with the Orinoquia Biodiversa Foundation (FOB) and local authorities, we identified and characterized the biodiversity associated with different ecosystems in our areas of operation in Casanare. These studies contribute significantly to increasing and accessing information on biological diversity, and to decision-making on the recovery and sustainable use of the region’s natural resources.
Our environmental investment projects in Colombia include the identification, purchase and donation of protected areas. They include the La Esmeralda Nature Preserve, classified as a perpetual conservation area due to its unique animal and plant life, and the Chingaza National Natural Park, an area of great biodiversity, particularly vulnerable due to private sector agriculture, livestock, hunting and the extraction of high value timber. The recovery of these areas is strategic for biological connectivity between ecosystems in areas of high environmental importance.
The Biodiversity and Development for Putumayo program is an initiative created in 2017 by ANDI (the National Business Association of Colombia) that focuses on integrating biodiversity into private sector operations, promoting the exchange of experiences and helping to improve the private sector’s environmental performance. GeoPark participates in the Biodiversity and Development for Putumayo program through its La Nueva Amerisur subsidiary, in association with National Natural Parks (PNN), the Alexandre Von Humboldt Institute, Corpoamazonia, the SINCHI Institute and the Biodiversity Information System.
Our environmental management includes water efficiency projects such as reducing water capture from natural resources, stopping water discharges, reusing or reinjecting water, and the efficient and responsible consumption of industrial and domestic water. Our goal is to steadily increase the share of reused and recirculated water in our operations.
As part of our focus on protecting and restoring water-related ecosystems, we signed an agreement with the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) on creating what will be the first network of flow monitoring stations on the Meta River. Our partnership with IDEAM will include the first regional network to receive information from monitoring stations, as well as satellite information and the findings of a climatological radar strategically located in the heart of Colombia’s Orinoquia region. This project will be critical to decision-making in the areas of public health, risk management, agriculture, fishing, water management, tourism, transportation and energy in the communities around the river.
Our integrated waste management plan aims to control the potential environmental or human health impact of our hydrocarbon exploration and production activities. We have implemented permanent cross-sector programs throughout the Company and its assets to raise awareness, train, and educate our employees on the efficient use of natural resources and compliance with environmental regulations.
