Parex, GeoPark reject acts of violence in Villanueva

Verano Energy, a partner of Parex Resources, and GeoPark, oil and gas operating companies in Colombia’s Casanare department, state their concern about events concerning Mr. Milton Bejarano, who reported having been subjected to intimidatory behavior when he arrived at his home in Villanueva on Saturday, December 14. The companies express their solidarity with Mr. Bejarano, and urgently call for the authorities to carry out investigations to clarify the events and take appropriate legal measures to guarantee the safety of the territory and its inhabitants.

The companies respect human rights, especially those of all people and communities neighboring their operations, and repudiate any threat to individuals’ life, dignity and integrity. Moreover, threats against social leaders are a clear violation of healthy and peaceful coexistence in the territory. Accordingly, the companies categorically reject any indication, insinuation or accusation that connects them to threats against the life of any person. Such accusations contravene the values of mutual respect, dialogue and trust that govern their actions.

As soon as they heard about this situation, both Verano Energy and GeoPark called on the relevant authorities to carry out the necessary investigations and procedures to guarantee safety in the area and that of Mr. Bejarano. The companies hope that the Ombudsman’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office, as well as any authority with competence in this serious situation, can move forward with the necessary processes.

Verano Energy and GeoPark are confident that the actions of the authorities will help protect the rights and ensure the integrity of their neighbors. They reiterate their belief in building and strengthening relationships based on respect and trust, which are essential principles to guarantee the sustainable development of their operations in the territory.
